Artist Statement

Flora Ramirez-Bustamante's paintings blend elements of the modernist repertoire with aspects of everyday life. Using still-lifes and portraits as entry points, she depicts cultural symbols, her connection to art history and/or domestic objects in a new context. She is interested in the act of painting itself and how the objects and the figures are represented on the canvas, extracted from the canvas or inserted as fragments in a new whole.
